Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire CEO of Meta, was just revealed to be the buyer of a 15,000 square foot mansion in Washington, D.C. The $23 million cash sale is the third-most expensive in the city’s history.
The home, located in the Woodland Normanstone neighborhood, was purchased by a mystery buyer in early March. Politico, which broke the story, noted that, shortly after the deal went through, images of the house were pixelated on Google Maps.
“Mark and Priscilla have purchased a home in D.C., which will allow Mark to spend more time there as Meta continues the work on policy issues related to American technology leadership,” a spokesperson for Meta told the publication.
The architect told Washingtonian: “It is a house that was cozy and comfortable when it was used just by the family but also could be converted and used for large-scale entertaining.”
Experts note that Zuckerberg likely purchased the house to send a message to President Donald Trump. “I think it’s proximity and being here,” longtime veteran of Washington’s high-end real-estate market, Tom Daley, told Politico. “It’s the ultimate bow to the man in the White House. To me, it’s a little reminiscent of when the Trump Hotel was the Trump Hotel. He notices who’s there. It’s an easy way to say, ‘Hey, we’re with ya. Here we are.’ I’m sure he takes it as the ultimate compliment.”
Zuckerberg joins fellow tech billionaires in purchasing a home in the nation’s capital. Jeff Bezos, Eric Schmidt, Peter Thiel, and David Sacks all now have multi-million dollar mansions in Washington, D.C. Thiel’s home is even in the same neighborhood as Zuckerberg’s new one. The Meta CEO’s new house is a 12-minute drive to the White House.
